Neurodiversity In The Workplace

Great minds don’t always think alike.  1 in 8 people are considered neurodiverse or not “neuro-typical”.  Neurodiversity refers to the range of differences in individual brain function and cognition among the general population.  We often look at neurodiversity in the context of a spectrum, with Hypersensitive people at one end and Hyposensitive individuals at the opposite end.  The sensitivity on the spectrum refers to sensory stimuli.

As designers, it is our duty to provide a variety of types of space within space to accommodate as many different brain types as possible.  We can accomplish this flexibility through careful space planning and product selection.  Nook Wellness Pods are customizable furniture enclosures that are designed with the purpose of “improving productivity, communication and well-being”. The pods are configurable to meet the needs of any individual.  With integrated technology, acoustic design to manage noise levels, and tunable lighting controls, these intimate pods create an adaptive and inclusive sanctuary that can be specified on any type of project.

By designing and creating environments that support a minority of neurodiverse people, we allow the majority of users to thrive!  This leads to a more innovative and productive culture.
